Ocean Freight Forwarding from India
Comprehensive Full Container Load (FCL) and Less than Container Load (LCL) services connecting primary global trade lanes.
Most of what moves between India and the rest of the world moves by sea, and most of what goes wrong with it is avoidable. A booking made too late for the sailing. A container gated in after cut-off. Documents that don't match, so the shipment clears three days behind schedule and the buyer starts asking questions.
EMAJ Freight handles ocean freight for importers and exporters shipping through V.O. Chidambaranar Port (Tuticorin) and six other major Indian ports. We book the space, prepare and check the documentation, coordinate customs clearance, and arrange inland movement at origin — full container loads and consolidated shipments alike.
FCL — Full Container Load
Full container load is the right choice when your cargo fills or nearly fills a container, or when it's fragile, high-value, or shouldn't share space with anyone else's freight.
We handle:
LCL — Less Than Container Load
When your cargo doesn't justify a full container, LCL lets you pay for the space you use. Your consignment is consolidated with other shipments moving on the same route and deconsolidated at destination.
LCL suits smaller consignments, trial orders, and shipments where holding inventory costs more than the freight premium. The trade-off is transit time — consolidation and deconsolidation add days at both ends, and LCL is more exposed to delay because your cargo waits on a container that other shippers are also filling.
As a rough guide, once a consignment reaches roughly 13–15 cubic metres it's usually worth pricing FCL against LCL, because LCL rates are charged per cubic metre or per tonne and the cost curve crosses well before a container is physically full. The exact crossover depends on the lane, the season and the current rate environment — we'll price both and show you the comparison rather than assuming.
Ports We Ship Through
Our head office is in Thoothukudi, next to V.O. Chidambaranar Port. At six other major Indian ports we work through local agents who handle clearance and cargo coordination, managed by our team here.
Tamil Nadu
- V.O. Chidambaranar Port (Tuticorin) — head office
- Chennai Port
- Kamarajar Port (Ennore)
- Kattupalli Port
Kerala
- Cochin Port
- Vizhinjam International Seaport
Maharashtra
- Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva)
For an exporter in southern Tamil Nadu, this means the port decision can follow the rate and the sailing schedule rather than being fixed by which agent you happen to have a relationship with. If a Nhava Sheva sailing gets your cargo to Europe a week earlier, that's available without appointing a new party.
What We Handle on Every Shipment
Documentation
Sea freight documentation is where clearance delays begin, so we review the set before anything is filed rather than after a query comes back:
The most common single cause of an assessment query is a mismatch between the invoice description and the declared HS code — cheap to catch before filing, expensive afterwards.
Why Work With Us
Hands-on experience, not a call centre.
EMAJ Freight is run by a team with 9+ years of hands-on experience in international freight forwarding. When you call, you're talking to someone who has actually handled ocean freight shipments before, not reading from a script.
Local to the port, coordinated everywhere else.
Our office is in Thoothukudi, and we coordinate clearance and cargo handling at six other major Indian ports through local agents — one team managing the whole route, not a handoff between strangers.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between FCL and LCL?
FCL means you book a full container for your cargo alone. LCL means your cargo shares a container with other shipments and you pay for the volume you use. FCL is usually faster and better for fragile or high-value goods; LCL is cheaper for smaller consignments but adds transit time at both ends for consolidation and deconsolidation.
At what volume should I switch from LCL to FCL?
Around 13–15 cubic metres is a common point to start comparing, though it varies by lane and by the current rate environment. Because LCL is priced per cubic metre or tonne, the cost curve often crosses before a container is physically full. We'll quote both.
Which ports do you ship from?
V.O. Chidambaranar Port (Tuticorin), where our office is, plus Chennai, Kamarajar (Ennore), Kattupalli, Cochin, Vizhinjam and Nhava Sheva through local agents.
How long does ocean freight take?
Transit time depends on the lane, whether the sailing is direct or transhipped, and the carrier's rotation. Most long-haul routes from Indian ports involve transhipment at a hub, which adds time. We'll give you the actual transit for your route when we quote.
What determines an ocean freight quote?
Base ocean freight for the lane and equipment type, plus origin charges, destination charges, and surcharges that move with the market — bunker adjustment, currency adjustment, peak season surcharges where they apply. Rates move constantly, which is why a quote carries a validity period.
Can you handle customs clearance as well as freight?
Yes. Clearance is filed through our licensed CHA partner and coordinated by our team, so freight and clearance stay with one accountable party rather than being split between a forwarder and a separate clearing agent.
